History

Founded by Dr. Stanley D. Lindsey in 1966, SDL began with the design of the Student Union building at Tennessee State University. Since then, we've been at the forefront of structural engineering, pioneering the use of computers in design and integrating computer-aided design with drafting.

In 1989, we expanded to Atlanta, and in 2017, we acquired Bulla Smith Design Engineering in Charlotte. In 2024, we opened an office in Bangalore, India. SDL currently has four offices - Nashville, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Bangalore.

Technologies

SDL employs the latest commercial analysis software and in-house developed tools for complex projects, including finite element analysis, non-linear analysis, and material-specific analysis. Our drafting and modeling capabilities utilize software such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, Dynamo, and Tekla.

We leverage collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Bluebeam Studio, and Autodesk Construction Cloud to facilitate seamless communication, project management, and effective collaboration with clients and remote team members.

Sustainability

SDL is committed to sustainable structural design, aiming for net-zero embodied carbon by 2050 as part of the SE 2050 Initiative. With LEED AP professionals in all offices and active involvement in sustainable design efforts, we lead the way in creating a greener future.
