Thomas Tarpy, Jr., Ph.D., P.E.


Dr. Tarpy is President of SDL and Principal-In-Charge of the Nashville (Brentwood), Tennessee office. His responsibilities include providing strategic guidance and design oversight for the company. He maintains hands-on contact with many of the firm’s projects and clients, supervising projects from start to finish and assists in developing principal structural design concepts and innovative economical solutions to complex structures. Dr. Tarpy has experience with projects of virtually every building type, including multi-story, mid- and high-rise office and residential towers, sports facilities, elementary, high school, higher education facilities, industrial and military installations, and single-family residential. He has developed a vast resume of medical facilities throughout Florida and the United States, and possesses expertise in facility planning and the evaluation of existing structures for their potential alternative uses. His experience and reputation have naturally resulted in providing peer review and expert witness services for numerous projects. He has been with SDL since 1974.

Dr. Tarpy received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Master of Science in Engineering Mechanics from Tennessee Technological University, and Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering from Vanderbilt University. He is a registered Professional Engineer in 41 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Honors and Awards include NDEA Title IV Fellowship, Vanderbilt University; Chi Epsilon – National Civil Engineering Society; The Society of Sigma XI, Honorary Research; and Order of the Engineer.

Dr. Tarpy is a member of the American Concrete Institute, American Institute of Steel Construction – Code of Standard Practice Committee (past Partners in Education Committee), American Iron and Steel Institute (past Advisory Member), American Society of Civil Engineers (past President of the Nashville Branch and Steering Committee Chair), American Society for Testing and Materials (past Chair), Research Council on Structural Connections – Board of Directors (past Chair Executive Committee), Singapore Structural Steel Society, and Construction Specifications Institute.

For over 20 years, Dr. Tarpy served as Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering and Research Associate Professor at Vanderbilt University. He has authored and co-authored numerous papers and publications and is well known in the structural design industry. Dr. Tarpy has been invited to address architects and engineers throughout the world on design issues involving innovative and economical structural advances.
